Frequently Asked Questions

For over 150 years, families across West Michigan have come to us with the same heartfelt questions during one of life’s hardest moments. We’ve gathered the most common ones here so you can find clear, honest answers no pressure, no jargon. How much does a headstone or monument cost?

The honest answer is that it depends but we believe you deserve real numbers to plan with. As a general guide, a flat granite marker typically starts in the $800–$1,500 range, an upright single monument usually falls between $1,800 and $4,500, and larger companion or custom monuments can run $3,500 and up depending on size, granite color, and the detail of the carving and etching work. Bronze markers, benches, and laser-etched portraits add to the cost. The biggest factors are the type of memorial, its size, the granite color you choose, the complexity of the design, and any cemetery foundation requirements. We’ll walk you through every line so you know exactly what you’re paying for before you commit.

How long does it take to make a memorial?

Most memorials take 8 to 12 weeks from approved design to installation, though it varies with the season and granite availability. Custom work, imported granite colors, and detailed etchings take longer; simpler markers can sometimes be quicker. Winter weather in Michigan can also delay cemetery installation, since the ground must be workable to pour a proper foundation. We’ll give you a realistic timeline up front and keep you updated at every step.

What are the cemetery rules where my loved one is buried?

Every cemetery sets its own rules for monument size, material, color, and placement and they can differ even between sections of the same cemetery. Some allow only flush markers; others permit full upright monuments. This is where our experience matters most: after serving West Michigan since 1873, we know the regulations at nearly every cemetery in the region, from the small township grounds around Lowell to the larger cemeteries throughout Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Allegan, Ottawa, Eaton, Clinton and Barry counties and beyond. We confirm the requirements for you and make sure your memorial is approved before we ever begin engraving.

Do I have to buy a marker from the cemetery?

No. You are free to choose your own independent monument provider, and you are never required to purchase through the cemetery itself. Families often find that working directly with a dedicated monument company gives them more design freedom, more personal attention, and better value. We handle the approval and installation coordination with the cemetery on your behalf.

Can I personalize a monument with a photo or custom artwork?

Absolutely! This is one of the things we’re known for. We offer laser etching, ceramic porcelain photo inserts, custom shapes, religious and military emblems, florals, and original artwork. Whatever helps tell your loved one’s story, we’ll find a way to bring it to life.

Do you make memorials for cremation?

Yes. While a memorial isn’t required after a cremation, many families find real comfort in having a place to visit and reflect. We offer cremation benches, columbarium and niche options, and a range of markers and urns; including options that hold cremated remains. We’re glad to talk through what feels right for your family.

Can a name be added later for a spouse or family member?

Yes. Many families choose a companion monument with space for a second name and date to be added when the time comes. We carefully match the original lettering style and finish so the later inscription looks like it was always part of the stone. This is often called final-date engraving, and we perform it right at the cemetery. Call us for pricing!

Should I plan a memorial in advance?

Many families do, and there are real benefits. Planning ahead lets you make thoughtful decisions without the weight of grief and time pressure, ensures the memorial truly reflects your wishes, and spares your family difficult choices later. We’re happy to help you plan privately and at your own pace.
